The combo of the tree and good garden soil provides a good environment for the growth of fungi. I think puffballs and some stinkhorns are gelatinous inside before they mature so you might want to do some googling around that. Also, Here's a link to a page I found with egg-shaped fungi....maybe you can find yours here:

Well, that certainly was an interesting site about fungus! I'm sure that one of those matches mine, although I'm not positive which one. (The stinkhorn looks the most like it) Thanks for your help!
