It looks like a mushroom on the outside and like an egg on the inside. It is kind of gelatinous after disection on the inside as well (but firm like tofu) About 2 inches in length and the same shape as a small egg. Any ideas? I will try to attach the photo...

The photo is kinda fuzzy (or maybe that's just my ol' granny eyes), but is it possibly just a zuke that is deformed or moldy or something?

Here are a couple more photos - there are 5 in a clump together and are were mushroom like, although inside they are gelatinous. You can tell the size by looking at the hand shovel in the photo.

Sorry, I don't think the photo went through, I had to resize it. So here it is again - they really look like small eggs...

Oh, that definitely is a better picture. There are so many kinds of fungi and I'm familiar with very few. There are even some really gross slime molds, one of which is called Dog Vomit Fungus. Maybe we have a mycologist here who will check in and provide an ID.

Has the ground where your zucchini is growing been garden for a long time or is built on or near any old tree stumps or roots?

Both, it has been a garden for about 6 years and it is close to a very large tree (not a stump) which I've decided to take out because the veggies over the last 2 years are just not producing like they used to. There are too many millions of tiny roots coming up from the tree even though I rototill and prepare the soil well...
