Flowering begins in early summer, persisting until frost. Their dark pink buds open to hot pink flowers, which then become a paler soft pink as they mature and then finally finish their life cycle in a faded green. Bloom color is not affected by soil pH. This native shrub is heat tolerant and a reliable bloomer regardless of climate, soil, or pruning. Best in moist, well drained soil but adapts to most sites. Prune back in late winter to encourage strong new growth and flowering. Feed in early spring by applying a granular slow release fertilizer.
