ViewUse		It is important to note that all plants formerly classified under the names Zauschneria californica and Zauschneria arizonica are now properly classified as subspecies and forms of their new species name Epilobium canum. While this makes sense botanically, you'll still see them grown and listed as Zauschneria, and so they are listed under both Epilobium canum and Zauschneria californica in this reference. Whatever name you grow them under, the "California Fuchsias" are all wonderful drought-tolerant perennials that need little care and provide not only bright garden color and but also food for hummingbirds in late summer and fall. These are rather informal-looking plants which can go dormant with excessive heat or cold; they are best cut back when they get too rangy. Many named varieties are available, ranging from ground-cover types to 2' tall mounding varieties, with the most spectacular featuring bright orange-red flowers against a background of bright silvery-gray leaves.
