Biographical Information
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, home of my heart. In 2000 my husband and I moved to Colorado and have stayed to raise a family. I am the author of Sacred Land, Voices of the Earth, Zen and the Art of Raising Chickens, Living Earth Devotional, Zen and the Path of Mindful Parenting, and the forthcoming Mindful Thoughts for Gardeners. I garden with permaculture techniques, and by working with the spirit of the land to cocreate dynamic plants, soil, and soul. I teach part time and homeschool my two children.

What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
That soil needs to be dug every year. -
And, what is the reality?
Soil should be built from the top with mulch, leaves, and compost, and aerated gently with a broadfork or pitchfork. It's all about farming soil microbes, worms, and nutrients. -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
Rain boots, jeans, and a fall-colored comfy top. -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
To listen to the land and be a co-creator. -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
Some sort of green like orach, spinach, or kale. -
What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
I have a hard time with strawberries. Melons. Juicy things have trouble in my Denver area climate. -
What is your favorite time in the garden?
Any time! -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
Umber. -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
Planting. And harvesting. -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Maybe Buschart in British Columbia. One that no longer exists: my dad's garden on Vashon Island. -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My dad. He introduced me to gardening and taught me to love the land. -
Gardening Dilemmas
The heat and dryness of August. -
What do you dislike most about gardening?
When no matter what I do, things just shrivel up or can't fruit. -
What do you like most about gardening?
Plants. Smells. The soil. -
