Salvia apiana
California White Sage, Bee Sage

• Beautiful silvery white herb used in Ceremony, and medicinally. Also known as Bee Sage, and Sacred Sage. Grows wild in the Southern California area, but has been terribly treated by unethical people who are ripping up the plant by the roots, rather than harvesting the leaves. It is therefore becoming quite rare. Very fragrant. White sage requires excellent drainage. Thrives in full sun. Needs very little water, and is a perfect xeriscaping plant in its native zones. In my Zone, it requires some TLC to survive. White Sage is not picky about soil Ph, but it is very susceptible to mildews. Growing it in Granite scree or sand with pumice is a good solution to its drainage needs. It will need to be brought inside if your soil freezes, and as soon as the rainy season starts. Grows 3\'- 5\' tall and wide, with flower stalks adding another 2\' of height. This is a slow growing shrub, which is another reason why it is swiftly disappearing from its native range.
