I bought a white Pride of Madiera and am wondering how cold of temp it can handle? Also in my Sunset Garden book it said it was appropriate for zones 14-24. Why does your info say different zones? Thanks!

I grow Echium fastuosum in San Marcos and it is very happy. It came through this winter when temperatures went below freezing without any damage. Depending on the age of your Sunset Book, Echium fastuosum is synomus with Echium candicans. E. candicans is now the preferred name.

I did read that there is white Echium that is somewhat more winter tender but it is still hardy in Zone 22-24. The white Echium could be E. italicum or E. pininana. E. pininana is called Giant Echium and is originally from the Canary Islands. Perhaps you can check with the your nursery to see if they can give you the species name of your white Echium.

I have never seen a white Echium but it sounds wonderful. Where did you get it? I would love to hear what you find out about the name and how you make out with the plant.
