Purple Verbena

I planted 3 purple verbena a couple years ago to get some height in an area between my house and a path. They have become wild, growing every which way. I really like it but have no idea the proper way to prune it or when to prune it. Should I cut wayward stalks to the ground? Any help is appreciated.
