I think it's time to plant melons and tomatoes!

I think I'm going to plant some melons and tomatoes today. And if any of you guys live down here (North County, San Diego) I'll bring the extras to the Rare Fruit Growers meeting at MiraCosta College in Oceanside.

I think I'm just going to start them in flats and then move them to little newspaper pots. Here's a neat method of making pots out of newspaper:

I like using Miraclegro potting mix, since I want a sterile potting mix to start things in.

Very Cool suggestion, I'm definitely going to try that. I love the internet! I planted 3 tomatoes today the way walter suggested. I used a squat 15 gallon container and planted stupice, dona and brandywine. I have something in my soil that kills my tomatoes, so i'm really hoping this works! I also planted a bunch of peppers, but I haven't had too much success with melons. My guess is it just doesn't get hot enough where I am. Or it doesn't get hot enough to grow through the mildew which inevitably takes over my melons/squash.

Thanks Rich for the info to make paper pots. I made a practice pot of a 8x11 size paper and got a cute little pot. I'm already thinking different possibilities to use this kind of pots by using different kind of papers.

Its best to wait and plant garden vegetables when all the frosts are gone, after april 15th here in Tn.
