From the perspective of a fruit fanatic

PLANTING
* Plant bare-root deciduous fruit trees, shrubs, and roses.
* Plant cool-season flowers, tubers, and bulbs.

WATERING
* Irrigate established plants only if rains do not arrive.
* Build water basins around new plants.

FERTILIZE
* Provide your citrus and avocados with an iron supplement at this time.
* Feed cool-season flowers and vegetables.
* Feed Epiphyllum (orchid cactus) and epidendrum.
* Fertilize established trees, shrubs, ground covers, and perennials.
* Your deciduous trees should begin to start coming out of dormancy and start producing leaves; use a fertilizer that includes a higher concentration of nitrogen at this time. Berries and bananas should be going through the same process and requirements.
* Do not fertilize tropical or native plants at this time.


MAINTENANCE
* After harvesting your kiwis, you need to prune them.
* Cut ginger and canna to the ground once all chance of frost has past.
* Dead-head cool-season flowers.
* Great time to do grafting.
* If you didn’t do your pruning or applied dormant sprays in the last couple of months, you may still be able to do so, but look at your trees and see if it buds are beginning to swell, if they are, you may not want to prune or spray them.
* Prepare your garden for the upcoming rains.
* Prune fuchsia and impatiens.
* Start summer vegetables, herbs, and flowers seeds in pots.

PEST CONTROL
* This is the best time to control crabgrass; otherwise you will be paying for it later.
* You may want to ‘wash’ your citrus at this time with a soapy solution to control pests.
