If you are in Southern California, then lettuces would still be a good bet, even in December/January.

January & February are great times to plant all sorts of Lettuce plants. You can find many now, ready to go. The bronze and burgundy colors can ad interest to your garden. They can even make great hanging baskets, or border plants. You just check them about every 3 days and pick off some of the leaves, it is a great way to 'eat your ornamentals'. Cabbage, Kale, Peas, and maybe a Tomato or two if you live in a frost free area of San Diego. Onions, from 'starts' or seed are good now also. Carrots, Radish and Beets (from seed) are good winter/spring crops as well. Check for Strawberries and other berries too, may be a little late for the 'cane berries' but Blue Berries are great also, they are available now. This rain will make everything very happy.
Sorry, but the WEEDS will be happy to. Hope you have a program for weed control, there are pre-emergent types that work well, and even an "Orgainc" one if you choose to go that route.
