I'm going to bring the extra melons to the next California Rare Fruit Growers meeting, and maybe the tomatoes if they're big enough by that time.

(From Gourmet Seed International) Believed to be referred to by Jefferson in 1774 as the 'Canteloupe Massa'. Considered lost by many even to this day. The ugliest melon we have come across in a long time, but a favorite anyway around here for intense, rich flavor. In Italy known as 'Brutto ma Buono' (ugly but tasty).

Napoletano Verde Precoce



Heirloom green skinned melon imported from Italy. Early winter melon that doesn't keep as long as most winter types, but excellent flavor makes it worthwhile. The flesh is a pale whitish, quite thick, very sweet and juicy. The fruits are oval with dark green skin that is lightly wrinkled. It is also known as 'Napoletano verde precoce' and 'Valenciano Precoce'.

Noir Des Carmes



One of the easiest to grow yet one of the most luxurious of all melons. Extremely dark green skin, almost black when immature, ripening to mostly orange flesh mottled with green. Sweet, aromatic, orange flesh. Very productive And judging by the germination and vigor of my seedlings I suspect this may be true.

I seem to be having trouble with "damping off" -- fungus... I'm losing a lot of the melons that I try to pot up. So I apologize but I don't know if I'll be bringing any to the Rare Fruit Growers meeting in San Diego.

what a bummer - did you get enough for your garden?

Yeah, I've got enough for my garden. The ones that didn't like transplanting and died, the most, were the heirlooms... But I should still have enough of them. I have plenty of the crenshaw and honeydew, and muskmelon, and plenty of the ananas. But I'm afraid to try transplanting them into little pots.

In the future I would just start them in individual paper pots and then just plant the pots. I'll probably just spray the remaining plants with chlorothalonil. Part of the problem seems to be my potting mix. I had a mix I'd made myself for carnivorous plant (one part peat moss, one part perlite, one part fine orchid bark, and one part worm castings) and that didn't work well at all... The MiracleGro mix worked MUCH better. So in the future I'll just use the MiracleGro mix.
