Favorite vegetables??

Tomatoes? I think Burpee's \"Brandyboy\" is superb! It's just like Brandywine -- only MUCH more productive. Then of the heirloom tomatoes Rose is excellent, Cherokee Purple is really excellent, Black Krim is really excellent, and Mortgage Lifter is really good too! I grew Big Zac this year and it was a disappointment.. The tomatoes were actually little and the flavor wasn't as good as some of the other..

Corn? I really love the new supersweet (sh2) corns! Stokes has an excellent selection.

Squash? Blue Hubbard is great if you have the space. I love Burpee's Bush Acorn. And I really like Tahitian Melon Squash that I'm growing this year.

Melons?!! Ananas are really really good! Better than any other I've grown here near the ocean. I love \"Angel\" ananas that Stokes sells, \"Creme de la Creme\" that Burpee sells, and \"San Juan\" ananas that Johnny's sells! They are the most fragrant sweetest melons I've ever grown. The Galia's are similar -- but green. However \"Passport\" is not my favorite. Some of the others are sweeter.

\"Descado\" is a pretty good honeydew. Stokes sells it. And Burpee's \"Early Crenshaw\" is pretty good too, as well as their \"Ambrosia\" muskmelon.

The squirrels chewed up the plants of my Sharlyn melon, so I can't really report on that this year..

I tried a couple of the French Charentais melons (true cantaloupes). And they were a bit disappointing. They never really got sweet here... No where near as sweet as the Ananas. I tried \"Burpee's Honey Girl\" and \"Savor\".

Onions? Since I live down in San Diego in a lower latitude and onions are day-length sensitive I grow the \"day-neutral\" onions. My favorite is definitely \"Candy\".

And as far as winter gardening goes I love the old-fashioned \"Tall Telephone\" (\"Alderman\") peas. I think that they're sweeter and have better flavor than \"Sugarsnap\" -- which have given me funny flavored peas before.

What are you guys favorites?

I think it's human nature to covet what you don't have, so those tomatoes you're talking about make my mouth water. The only tomatoes I've truly had success with along the coast in Southern California is 'Yellow Pear\". I bet Brandyboy would move right to the top!

As for tomatos, I've grown so many that a few years ago I made a chart to keep track of size, shape, taste, etc. (People who peel tomatos for canning desire round tomatos). Anyway, you can find the chart at www.frostconcepts.com/horticulture/

What veggies do you recommend for fall planting in Point Loma?

I was just talking about this with my wife, it's been really tough for me and veggies this year in my Point loma garden. Things i know i can grow are hot peppers (any local var), bell peppers (any kind), artichokes, green beans and tomatillos and corn (short season variaties have worked better). I have a problem with squash (i get mildew on the leaves) and eggplant just doesn't seem to get hot enough.

With all this said, i'd welcome any suggestions!

Here's a picture of some tomatoes I picked today. They are a mix of different heirloom varieties. Incidentally the yellow tomatoes \"Pineapple\" and \"Big Rainbow\" are the biggest tomatoes I've ever grown. I've grown a number of them over four pounds.
