black widows - need some help was created by Mitch
Hello Everyone,
Anyone know what to do to remove and prevent Black Widows? I've noticed a few in my back yard in my garden and now a couple more in a couple of other places? Are there any natural predators? I have kids picking fruit in my yard all the time and I don't want anyone to get bit!
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

They have a bad reputation, I guess if you get bit it can be bad. In reality, you don't hear of many incidents, that is good. My impression is they are usually hiding in out of the way areas, like dark and shady, wood piles old plastic cans, pallets etc. you usually don't see them unless you move something they are hiding in or under. That is the good news. So just be careful moving things that have not been used in a while. If you just want to spray with something use SEVIN liquid, and spray with a strong, heavy stream. Bad news it is difficult to get the spray in all of the hidden spaces they hide in. It is unusual to see them hiding in plants, but it may be a possibility, it is not something I have noticed anyway. Keep your kids out of the woodpile and don't let them use empty cans for hats.
Best is just try to be super careful when you pick up or move something not used in a while.
