Missing Plants: Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower)

This casual, multiplying plant gives you soft blue, pink, white or purple blossoms (different types) on stamens that float above the bunched leaves. It blossoms continuously from late spring into fall, even winter in California. It's hardy, can be transplanted, trimmed, or even ignored, as long as you water it. It will fill in your bare spots from full sun to part shade. And it will be a ground level companion to all types of larger plants.

Different varieties can be found for different zones with varying color to the leaves and blossoms.

We do have several Scabiosa listed in the data base. If you are not sure of the species try Scabiosa spp. Several of our listings may be called by the common name of Pincushion or Pincushion Flower. The most common Pincushion is probably Scabiosa columbaria. There are several very popular cultivars that are currently available in the nurseries. In 2000 one was named Perennial of the Year.
