Lilly of the Valley

I just found 1 gallon plants of Lilly of the Valley at Walmart for $4.44. They are beautiful. Does anyone in north county own one and if so how is it doing? From what I am reading they sound difficult to maintain.

It thrives on shade and moisture. If you have grown Clivia, it likes similar conditions. The rhizomes are invasive and the plant sap is a skin irritant - in ways that will remind you of Lily of the Nile (agapanthus). I like it in the wild but don't grow it at my home.

Walmart is great for common plants like some bright geraniums, etc. Since you are in San Marcos, why not wander into the Green Thumb Nursery on San Marcos Blvd. and find out from one of the full-time nursery staff what they might suggest.

Well a little time has passed but "LILY OF THE VALLEY" could mean more than one thing, plant wise. One does not really do well here (San Diego area), except as a novelty. Convallaria majalis is sometimes sold early in the year as 'pips'. It is better suited to colder areas up north or back east. BUT it is often sold here for short periods of time.
Pieris japonica is much more common in this area. It is known as "Lilly of The Valley Shrub" It is not related to the plant above at all. These usually grow to small shrub like plants to about 3' to 4' tall. They are evergreen and the blooms resmeble those of the Convallaria plant.
There is still antother Clethra arborea or "Lilly of The Vally Tree" which is an evergreen that can reach 20' in time. It also has small white blooms that resemble "Lilly of The Valley".
They are all quite different, better check to see which one you bought at Wal-Mart.
