My malvaviscus arboreus drummondii (turks cap) is starting to fruit. Can I use these little red balls to start new ones? Not very successfull in propogating. :P

Turks cap is in the mallow family, along with other popular plants such as Abutilon and Hibiscus. Some are poisonous, but many edible kinds can be found in \"Cornucopia II\", under Malvaceae.

The seeds will be viable when the fruit is over-ripe and begun to wrinkle. Allow the fruit to dry and keep the little pods free of tiny mites (i.e., pesticide) that eat the dried pulp. When sufficiently dry (a week or two), break open the pods, remove the seeds, and store away from dry rot and pesky critters. In the spring, plant about 1/8 inch deep in a seed starter tray.

You can find lots of helpful information on propagation in \"Plant Propagation\" edited by Alan Toogood.
