My name is Bob,
I am a Pastor assisting Troubled Youth and Families. This is my past time and leisure after helping so many!! I saw your site and was curious about getting help in this area. Note: The Profile Picture is the plant!! Listed Above in picture!!
I have a Mexican Fan Palm tree..... Washingtonia robusta??? that was given to me. I have had great success for a season, and now just a few problems after winter storm. All the leaves came off except 3. It was a very tall tree with towering leaves, but during storm, I failed to cover with a sheet. I finally did cover the plant and the plant is comig back. However, because of being root or pot bound I pulled the plant out and put more soil because those roots are very much aquainted with each other. I don't want to under water or overwater it. I have before used at leased 2 1/2 gallons of water, but now i'm using 1 maybe 1 1/2 gallons of water. New leaves are coming. There is good drainage; a opening on both sides of the largest pot bottom sold at Walmart Garden dept. I am sorry for the length kind of nervous just yesterday lost my baby sister from cancer. Thanks for understanding!! I hope I am doing it right. It was succh a beautiful scene until the doves were lodging in it often and trying to build a nest!! Thanks for your help!! I can be reached at: pastorbob@liberationministriesinc.org my site is: liberationministriesinc.org 972-4449925 I do nt know how to use this new vehicle of help, bt I am trying??? Note: The Profile Picture is the plant!! Listed Above in picture!!

Yes, Washingtonia robusta is Mexcian Fan Palm. They are quite hardy, down into the mid 20's probably, in winter. I think your plant would be happier if it was in a larger container or in the ground. Small pots are generally difficult for these, they get too dry or just not enought space for the roots. In a container about 15 gallon size, probably water about two times a week unless it is super hot, then maybe every other day.
They will grow faster, look better if you fertilze them with a plant food high in nitrogen (first number of the three). If it is a dry plant food feed them about once a month, if it is a liquid do it two times a month. If you replant it into a larger container get a 'good potting mix in a bag' don't use the soil out of your yard, if you really want it to grow well. They do best in mostly sun, a little shade is OK, but not real shady, they get spindly.
