For best flower production, it's a good idea to deadhead annual dianthus. The plant will continue to bloom without deadheading, but you'll get more blooms if you deadhead, and the plant will look better if you remove spent flowers. Pinch out blooms to the first set of true leaves.

Yeah, I agree deadheading not necessary but all annuals flower more after removing spent blooms. I take them off and dry seeds for next years crop.
