Asparagus / Artichoke questions....moving?

Well here goes... I love these two vegetables tremendously. the problem for me is that they are truly quite slow growing i.e. taking in excess of 2 or more likely 3-4 years before you get a good crop out of either asparagus, or artichokes... I happen to adore both of them! In my humble opinion that is a lot of time to invest in a crop. As in my case most likely these would be grown in the ground here.

My question is this... I go to all the trouble, and time in raising these artichokes, and asparagus, and GASP! I decide to move for whatever reasons... you name it economy, rent is to high, sold the property, etc or simply my decision ... Thus I will be decide / forced to move on to greener pastures...

My question would be for all you vegetable gardener’s out there. Can you transplant these vegetable’s to a new location? If so how would do you do it? What would be the optimum time of year? What precautions would you take if any? I am unsure as to how movable they are....

I haven't had much luck with asparagus, it seems to need to much water for my so cal garden, so I can't comment on that.

But Artichokes are a different story, I absolutely think everyone should grow artichokes. Look for little seedlings and plant them and they will give and give and give! The cool thing about artichokes is they grow all winter (in my garden sunset zone 24) and then have giant wonderful artichokes in early spring. Then they die back in summer and they send up little "pups" that grow all summer then there is a smaller (and not as wonderful, but still good) crop in Fall. Then the same thing happens, they die down, new pups form and then another GREAT crop next spring. You can transplant the pups very easily. In fact I don't think there is anything in my garden that gives more with less work.

So I say GO FOR IT!!!!! B)

I have more asparagus experience, you could did the crowns up and replant at a new location, either in fall or spring, but you would probably have to sacrifice a season again as they re-established themselves. Having moved so much, I sympathize completely. But there's no way around it with these two veg,it must be why we love them so much.

O.K. so I will definitely try the artichokes...
Can you recommend a variety?? In fact, I think I will give both of them a try... The worst the asparagus can do is croak on me.. My thinking here is that they are so doggone expensive in the stores around here!! So I don't really have all that much to lose, and the big box stores usually carry them this time of year anyways.. That reminds me I need to buy some more greek oregano! I just did not have enough this past year. . . Thanks for the advice. What's the worst that can happen... I leave them behind for someone else to enjoy. Pay it forward so to speak....

Yes moving sucks!! I think I could manage a year for the asparagus to re-establish themselves.. I'm not moving yet I'm just thinking about the future ~ I just don't want to invest all the time and effort into something like this and then end up leaving it behind because it may be temperamental and not transplant at all. Does that make sense? I don't mind leaving plants behind if I have nowhere to move them to, however, if I have the opportunity to move them to a new space then I by all means will. If that makes sense...
