Feral Cat Troubles...

Well I think what i may end up with is a dog :)
I do miss having one. I have not had a dog in years.
I may resort to getting one myself.

Although, I am intrigued by the electronic gadget with the ultra sound noise... However, I guess my question to the maker's of this product would be. Since I have such a high trafficked yard by the multitudes of cats....Wouldn't they simply get used to it and ignore it after a while? I mean if I was only dealing with one or two cats I could see it probably working..

However, with a neighborhood of cats such as mine I think that they would eventually develop an indifference to it because I am sure that with all the cats around it would be continuously going off...

I unfortunately live somewhat close to an a small apartment complex virtually right next door. My side fence runs right along their parking lot.. :( Everybody's cat is over here eventually at one time ot another....

I am thinking that a dog that hates cats just maybe the proper choice around here. At least I won't have to worry about kitty's tearing up my newly planted seedlings and burying they're land mines for me to find argh!

University research shows that those ultrasonic devices do not work on small mammals, they haven't tested for cats. However sound waves will bother snakes. I think a dog is probably your best answer, there are a lot of cats at the neighbors across our pond and a few come over, but they don't stay long when Henry-dog goes bounding out there.

Many cities these days are dealing with the feral cat issue and organizations have popped up that specifically aim to trap the ferals humanly and then let them go in another area or acclimate them for adoption. You may want to check and see if such an org exists in your area. They will sometimes operate in cooperation with the local vet, who will donate healthcare for the ferals. Otherwise, a dog really works!! Good luck!

Here's an article about what they're doing with feral cats in Utah. www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2011...ll-passes-house.aspx

All I have to say is It's about time! I'm sure something of this nature will never fly in CA.. I'm sure that will ruffle some feathers, and give me a lot of flack on this board. However, before you chastise me hear my side.
We have trapped over 30 cats so far.. Each and everyone of them has been fixed. We have paid this out of our own pockets. We are really tired of the smell of cat sh%t.
The cats think the flower bed under our bedroom window is their own personal official toilet. It's not a flower bed anymore, it's just merely disgusting to say the least! Yes I have cleaned and cleaned this area. For the cats it's merely like cleaning a sandbox so they can do it again and again. It's so horribly bad we cannot even open our windows in the summertime. The cats are so determined that they even do their business on top of the chicken wire that I have laid down in this particular area to prevent such an event. Now that' just wrong in my humble opinion!!

This is CA we're discussing here... We open windows to let that wonderful delta breeze in to cool everything off...etc.. NOT US We simply can't! Yeah it would not be so bad if it was just a couple of cats, but we're not just talking about a couple of cats here.. And yes, if you happen to ask our A.C. Bill is off the hook due to the circumstances.

We cannot even BBQ in our own backyard! Something we both love to do. Normally in the past, we BBQ almost daily it's a right of summer..These cats and the filth they leave behind are unbearable. I'm super tired of trying to garden, and finding fresh piles in my beds, and seedlings uprooted everyday. Gardening for me has become a chore and not a joy anymore.

My neighbor has even gone so far as to donate $500.00 of his own money to the SPCA with the promise from them that they would do something to help. The sad part of that is nothing has been done! So please understand that I am venting my sincere frustrations with the whole situation. I am oh so tempted to move, however, with the economy in the situation it is right now. I do not think this would be wise for my situation at the moment either. So my goal now is investing in a dog from a shelter of course. I'm really leaning toward another golden retriever, or a german shepherd? If anyone is still speaking to me..what do you think??

I am so beyond Frustrated in CA

My next door resident 'feed every cat in the neighborhood' moved as of the first of the month. You know the one with the godzilla, overabundance of cats...( He was an @ss, Pardon my 'french' here.... I mean all in all he was well intentioned and everything took really good care of the 35 or so cats while he was here.) They would not even step foot near a trap at the time while he was here...Trust and believe, I did try because they would not Cr@p in his yard, however, they considered my yard their toilet! Especially underneath my bedroom window! Sweltering summers here, and cool delta breezes in the evening... The smell was absolutely horrendous! Yeah you could say that I was a bit p issy with him! Because, I could not open any window, and I do mean any window to enjoy the delta breezes that this area is renowned for.. Without it reeking from the smell of the cat poop...They had full belly's which is what I'm assuming...Oh so caring while he was here.. Yeah he was a dog person too... He had 5 sheltie's that were on non-dog food special diets. Meaning they ate mostly chicken and rice and all that fancy stuff too. I mean really no dog food whatsoever. He had $$ til the IRS caught up with him.

However, he did not move 1 cat with him when he did move, instead he opted to "leave them all" with a few groceries i.e. bags of cat food under his house thinking that they would "re-establish" on their own! !@##$%%&^&*&*(*()*()!!!!!!!!!!

Well by now I figure that they are about out of food. So hopefully they will migrate on out of here, and the few stragglers that refuse to leave will be able to be trapped. Hopefully anyways..

I just hope the folks in the apartment complex behind us don't decide to adopt any!!

That's my rant I just had to tell somebody!!
