Pruning

I have a mature fruiting mulberry tree that has gotten way out of shape. A major branch fell off this winter plus irregular care over the past ten years has left it looking like a very bad hair day. Do I need to wait until Winter to do a major pruning? I was thinking of reducing the height to 8 foot and start all over again.Thanks.SM

I think it would be best to wait till winter when the tree is dormant. But if you think there is a chance of more limbs braking off, I would try to trim some on those to try to keep the tree in reasonably safe condition. 8' is a lot to trim off, but if that is what you have to do, I guess you need to, but maybe not so drastic this time of the year.
