Question about rock fig or ficus petiolaris

Is anyone familiar with this plant? We bought one last Sunday, about 8" tall. When we bought it, it had 4 leaves. Now it only has 1 leaf left. The leaf seems to have good color and seems healthy but we are concerned the plant may die. It is planted in the ground along with other desert plants but has plenty of room and is near a drip line. Any suggestions?

Ficus petiolaris are usually tough little plants from Mexico. The leaves are about 3" wide and 4" long with reddish veins. They are small plants not much larger then 5' tall. Full sun and mostly and good draining soil. Don't keep them 'wet' all of the time. Often these plants are used for Bonsai. From my expeirince they are slow groing, perhaps a few inches a year. If you use a general purpose plant food about 4 or 5 times a year, they will probably hold more leaves and the leaves should be a little larger.
There is another Ficus that is sometimes confused with 'petiolaris' it is F. palmeri. It is also from Mexcio but grows larger, to maybe 15' or more. It takes pretty much the same care. It is fairly easy to distinguish the small plants from one another. F. palmeri has white veins in the leaves, F. petiolaris has 'reddish' veins. Small plants look very similar, somtimes labeled improperly.
