You will get better pollination and therefore fuller ears if you plant corn on a grid pattern instead of in rows. Plan on a grid spacing of 15" to 18". I plant my grids by making triangles of the correct spacing instead of squares. You can fit in more plants that way. I know that I didn't directly answer your how many plants question, but hopefully you can take this information and decide how much room you want to allocate to corn and come up with a number from there.
