flowering plants

I live in LV, NV and want to plant some kind of flowering plant that comes back each year and dosen't need much sun. Where I plan on planting is next to the walkway to my door and only gets 1-2 hours of afternoon sun.

I live in a suburb of San Diego that gets up to 103 in the summer, and I have a Giant Bird of Paradise in a huge pot in the mostly shaded area by my front door. It doesn't bloom, but it's tall and green. I have impatiens at the base for color. I don't know if the LV heat can take it, but it might be worth a try.

I have a friend who is a good residential garden desginer and once worked in the Las Vegas area. I asked him for recommendations for your spot. Here's his reply, "If there's enough space they could do a trellis of star jasmine or if they want to keep things low there's dwarf Ruellia "Katie" (pink flower), society garlic or Liriope. All of these are evergreen. Unfortunately most flowering perennials aren't going to perform well in that space and so many other things will just get too big and be a maintenance nightmare (trimming)."
