HELP WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO RECIEVE A YELLOW MAGNOLIA TREE. I GUESS THIS TREE IS THE LAST TO BLOOM OF THE SEASON. WELL IT IS DYING.IT IS ONLY GIVEN FROM GROWER TO OWNER I AM TOLD AND I CANT FIND ANY ? ANSWERED EVERYONE JUST KEEPS SAYING IT IS JUST A REG YELLOW MAG. AND I GUESSS IT IS NOT ANY SUG. THANX

I have always loved magnolias of all types but I do not see many here in California. When you spoke about the Yellow Magnolia I remembered a native magnolia that grew in southern NJ when I was a kid. I visited your profile and learned you were in Georgia. I contacted a dear friend and good horticulturist in Atlanta and asked him about the Yellow Magnolia.

This is his reply: the yellow magnolia is a variety of Japanese magnolia, or saucer magnolia, a deciduous type. As to why it's dying, who can say, except that the drought here in Ga continues and may have something to do with it. I had a 10' tall deciduous magnolia (M. macrophylla) at the farm, and it died back to the ground several years ago only to come back and is now fuller than before and 10' again. Its die-back remains a mystery to me. The Nursery at Ty Ty in south Georgia sells yellow magnolias and they may be of assistance: www.tytyga.com , 1-800-972-2101. (FYI, around here we refer to the unexplainable die-back or actual death phenomenon and "Up and Died Disease.")
