What is the easiest way to protect my apricots from being devoured by all the birds in my yard? I have this idea that I can put tin foil on the branches... will that work?

I have had really good success with hanging CDs from thin bamboo poles pushed into and through the tree held in place by branches and the weight of the CD hanging on the other side. I have used this method so far with peach, asian pear, plum and pomegranate. I tried the netting but the trees were big enough that it was very difficult to get it up and over and taking it off was damaging to the tree. I make sure to disinfect the poles and the discs between uses and do not put it in the tree too early. I only put them out when the fruit is ripening and then take them down. I am not sure but my gut tells me that the birds might get used to them and they wouldn't work so well. Also if you have a sunny breezy day and a puppy it can be quite entertaining.

Why are we talking about apricot trees in the Verbena thread ? :P

I just feed and prune my apricot tree so that there is enough for me and the birds.

OOOOPS! I hoped I was answering the question in the same place it was asked so the folks asking could find it. (It said plainly \"Apricot Tree\".) If I have done something amiss, please accept my absolute deepest abysmal heart-felt tear-jerking apology. Perhaps I should restrain myself from participating until I know what is acceptable. I do admit that I absolutely must learn the proper nomenclature of plants - perhaps you have a link to one that might be helpful? Many Thanks

Hi Far off Farm, don't worry about anything around here!:) The mistake was that we started the thread in the wrong place from the beginning, so you're reply was basically in the right place. But as I said, no worries, and I love your idea! Actually I do what richard says and I like your idea too. We're all having growing pains here at the Mulch! I'm sure we'll all get it figured out in time! I really appreciate your participation.

I hang the CDs with fishing wire right on the branches of the tree. I have done this with my cherry trees and shrubs and I finally was able to eat some cherries!
The CDs only last one season but my yougest (age 5) was so enthralled with the angels in the yard created by the sun hitting the CDs. One of the neighbors stopped to see what type of garden art I had invented!
