Citrus for everyone!

Really

There's a guy in Finland who grows two in his living room along with 3 dwarf bananas. Yup: he has a south-facing picture window. My mother's aunt grew them in a cabin about 100 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska! And in Julian (local mountains, here) there's at least one fellow growing them in a enclosed patio/greenhouse.

There are plenty of folks in snowy climates (let's hear from you!) that grow citrus outdoors in pots, then bring them indoors to a not-too-warm (70 to at most 80) sunny spot.

Then of course there are potted patio citrus trees for smaller locations.

They have great, sometimes hard to find varieties like the Robertson Navel. Also, their site is also full of good information on citrus culture.

Here's some citrus trivia for you (skip if you're already bored):
The Robertson Navel was a \"sport\" on a Washington Naval tree. The owner of that orange grove was Mr. Robertson, a police officer in Redlands, CA who lived next door to my grandfather, Marion Frost. Mr. Robertson took the sport to Howard Frost (twice or third removed cousin) at the UC Riverside citrus station where it became one of the varieties distributed to growers. Further, it was the advent of commercial trucking that made the citrus industry possible. But the right to ship was owned by the railroads, and my family sued the State of California RR commission and finally won when it went to the Supreme court. For more info ...

I have a variegated calamondin orange. I grow it in a south-east window in the winter. I don't have many oranges on it because I've used some of them to make orange sauce for basting my cornish hens. I have it in a small clay pot because I have overwatered them before. This really helps with that. I'm new to this site so we'll see if my picture worked. Patty:S
