Planting an avocado tree

Does anyone have advice on how to plant an avocado tree? I understand they need good drainage...does this mean filling the basin with some stones/small rocks before adding compost? Also should the basin be elevated slightly above ground level? How much and how often to water? We are in La Mesa and I see lots of avocados in the neighborhood, so the microclimate here must be good

Hi Roz,
Here's a good article about planting avocados in your area. www.themulch.com/fruit,-nuts-and-vegetab...ee-planting-and-care
How much room do you have and how big are you hoping to keep your tree?

We are putting it at the front of the yard about 7 feet from the street and inside a newly gated area...I went to Kingsman Avocitrus nursery today in Vista and purchased a reed dwarf- it's about 4 years old and about 9 ft high so far..I would like to keep it about 15 feet high.
