blueberries

I just bought 2 blueberry plants. Last season, I bought bare roots that initially did very well, then they died. I think I either over or underwatered. This time I paid the big bucks for beautiful plants in 2-gallon pots.

My question is can I plant them in a raised bed? That is where I put the bareroots that died. The bed is about
2'X 4'X 10" and it is in nearly full sun in the summer, but only about 1/2 day in the winter. Is this a good location. The varieties are Sharpblue and O'Neal. Both are low chill. I live in Pt. Loma. Thanks for any advice.

I think they should do great in a raised bed. I have o'neil, sharpblue, misty and jubilee, i planted them in the ground in full sun. I live in Point Loma, and i originally planted 3 plants, then planted 2 more a couple of years later (because they were so great). When I bought the first 3 the people at walter andersen's said i should mix a lot of peat moss in the soil before planting, because they like a more acidic soil, and that it's hard to change the pH from the top of the soil. So I added a TON of peat moss (probably 50% peat, 50% regular soil). Those three plants have done fantastic. Twice a year i add "Soil Sulpher" to help the pH in the soil (at the suggestion of WAN).

When I added the other two plants i didn't add as much Peat Moss (ok, i admit, i think i skipped the step completely:blush:) and those two plants have done poorly, in fact i'm about to move them with the hopes that I can fix the soil and replant them.

Thanks for the tips. When I planted the bareroot plants last year, I had read that you should put in a lot of peat. I think I had about 50/50 peat and soil. I thought maybe I had too much, so I removed a couple of shovels from the peat soil mix and replaced it with soil and organic amendment. I hope that works ok. So far they are still alive! I will try to remember to add the sulfur periodically. Maybe signing up for the plant care is a good idea! Thanks again for the advice!
