Pineapples!

A couple of years ago I planted some pineapples that I got at Exotica Rare Fruit Nursery in Vista. I haven't watered the poor plants much or even fertilized them. But the other day I was down weeding the garden -- and getting ready to plant because I'm a bit late this year -- when I noticed that three of the plants are blooming! We're going to get pineapples this year!

that's very cool, i have a pineapple someone gave me which is in a pot being neglected - can i just put it in the ground? is there any special soil or care requirements? I'm in Point Loma - i would LOVE to have a pineapple!

I added some peatmoss to the soil first, but I think that they'd do fine even if you just stuck them in the ground. I don't think that they're all that picky. I haven't water these poor plants in over a year and they still seem to be doing okay.

Neat story about Pineapples. A long time ago a lady came to the store and asked my Uncle how to grow Pineapples. He told her "Just cut off the top and plant them, they should do fairly well for you here." She came back about 3 months later and confronted him. She said "I did what you said and they just rotted."
After a few questions we found out she had cut off the tops and planted the fruit! ! ! No wander it rotted.
