Disabled accessible vegetable beds

Hello,

I am a new member. I used to be a avid gardener and then my attention had to be directed elsewhere. I have questions about disabled-accessible garden beds. My husband has MS and has recently expressed an interest in growing a garden. My established area with its bubblers and rows is not accessible to him. Do you know of any resources pertaining to a vegetable bed's dimensions? ergonomics? etc.

I think for the disabled, raised garden beds are probably the way to go. Proabably 2' to 2.5' above the ground is about right. This would take some work by using 2" x 10" or 2" x 12" boards to form a wall up. Then fill in behind that until it is about 3" below the boards. You could also use Rail Road Ties, they would work very well too, but much heavier to work with. I would think the bed should be about 3' wide or so. it sort of depends on how much room you have. But 3' wide most could work from both sides of the raised bed. It will take quite a bit of soil to fill this, some depends on how long you make it.
I would consider buying 'bulk soil' as opposed to buying it in bags, very costly in comparison. If you do buy bulk soil be sure to tell them you want 'Amended Soil' not just 'any old soil'. This way you should not really have to ad much to the soil in the way of orgainc amendments, it will save you a lot of work. I think most reputable soils people will have a 'mix' for you if you tell them you want to use it for veggies.
