Transplant Strawberries in June?

Today I "rescued" a half dozen strawberry plants from a local garden that was being taken apart. They were producing well, and look quite healthy. Will they transplant? If so, any special needs?

I have done the most abusive things to strawberries. For a while there was a local nursery growing strawberries in hanging baskets. They were so beautiful and of course producing tons of strawberries. I really could not live without a couple of those hanging baskets so I bought 2 and promptly brought them home and found out that they were so pot bound that they required watering twice per day. I generally stay away from anything that requires that much water. But they were so beautiful. Needless to say, they began to decline immediately because I just could not keep them watered. When they were almost totally gone I decided to do something. (Something I should have done on day one) In the middle of summer I divided both pots and planted these very stressed plants into the garden. The location was not great and the plants got very hot sun late in the afternoon. I was located 6 blocks from the Ocean so that did help.

I watered them in and covered them with a 60% shade cloth. I carefully watered them every morning before leaving for work and after only about a week they were perked up and taking off.

That was probably 6 or 7 years ago. Today I still have off-springs of those plants and now live 6 miles from the ocean. I must admit that I continue to abuse the strawberries and most of time share the fruits with all the local critters but they still keep growing for me and they are so beautiful.

I would plant your rescued plants. Water them, provide a little shade for a few days and mulch them in. What do you have to loose?

Since I posted my question in the forum, I did just as you have suggested, however, with not knowing exactly where in the veggie garden I wanted them to reside, I opted for a somewhat shallow, large diameter pot. In the last few weeks, they have not yet given me any fruit, but the foliage is bright and the plants seem happy. You were right. What did I have to lose? Now, I should probably give them a proper home.
