Horse Friendly Shade Tree

Looking for a tree to plant near my horses outdoor corral to create some partial shade for him in the hot summer and not too much in the wet months so his area will stay relatively dry.

It needs to be hearty since I will not be able to water more than 3x's per week.

It needs to be fast growing.

Not toxic/poisonous.

Able to hold up to strong winds.

Not messy.

Tall enough so the low branches are out of reach by my horse but not so tall it casts a shadow up the road and not on him.

Not too fun... wouldn't want my horse to turn it into a chew toy

According to the 'Manes and Tails' website (sorry, I don't have the exact web site name), the best, safest trees for pastures are the poplar family - poplar, cottonwood, quaking aspen. I don't know which would work best for you, but if you can water 3x/week, you could grow anything. Google the website for LOTS of toxic plants to avoid!!!
