plants for Durham, NC

We have just moved to Durham, NC and want to redo the flower beds and make some new ones. I'd like to plant Indian Hawthorne and Knockout Roses. The NC gardening book says they grow well but I don't see them anywhere. Is it because we have deer in our area?

Any suggestions for flowering shrubs is appreciated!

Thanks

Dear Rubyredbud,

Wow, are you ever lucky! Although I can not answer your questions I do know where to send you. You happen to have one of the best Arboretums in the country in your backyard. Visit the JC Raulston Arboretum. < www.ncsu.edu/jcraulstonarboretum/index.php > JC Raulston was one of the best known plantsman ever and he collected and planted most of the arboretum. You will see how hundreds if not thousands of different plants do in your area. You will find ever kind of plant and I am sure there will be lots of people at the arboretum who would love to talk plants with you. Let us know what you find! Liliana
