I need help select'g plants 4 our garden at school

hello everyone,
I am in charge of a garden project at my school for a club I am a part of. I need help in choosing summer vegetables that are best suited for growing in my area and where to get them. Your help will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

you have a lot of great options where you are, it really comes down to when you would like to plant them and when you'd like to harvest. I've spent a lot of time with my kids garden plot, and so much has to do with when the teachers have time to bring the kids out to participate.

Can you tell me when you'd like to start?

thank you for taking the time to read my post. I would like to start planting in the spring. Oh, and I'm sure this will help (I have a list of plants I would like to plant, but I don't know anything about varieties of the same plant and if that really matters);

It looks like all of the plants you've chosen will do great planted in spring. One thing you'll have to be aware of is the time each plant takes to start producing, it almost always says on the seed packets "matures in 89 days" etc. You'll need to make sure you have time to see the harvest before school gets out. In my experience Melons and Eggplant take a long time and they like heat, so you may have to plant them first and hope it's not too cold in early spring. I'm pretty sure strawberries can be planted now for spring harvest (i see them all over the place in Carlsbad Ca. right now). I'm not an expert, but I've grown a lot of veggies! My suggestion is to try a lot of different things and see what works best.
A few things that can be planted right now are:
Onions
potatoes
broccoli
carrots
brussel sprouts
bok choy
spinach
sugar snap peas (my kids favorite)
kale
shallots
cauliflower

My suggestion is to go to an INDEPENDENT nursery and ask them for varieties that will work in your area.

Thank you for the tips and the site. Because the garden project is so new, we are still clearing the area were we will be placing the garden beds, so we can not plant anything right now:(. If the garden does very well this spring we may possibly be able to plant all year round. Our club advisors will not mind, in fact they will be thrilled, to go down to the school during the summer to hold a club meeting and work on the garden. As for going over to local nurseries I will do that as soon as possible. Again, thank you very much. It means a lot to me:lol:.
