Vegetable garden bed help

We have been fighting gophers, and when we get rid of one others come, partly because our property snuggles up to county unused property that weeds grow 6 feet tall and the gophers seem to tunnel under the wall and like our yard. So I came up with the idea of putting in a raised garden bed. Got wood logs for the borders and it's about 15 inches high, put fine mesh wire in the bottom and stapled it to the logs, so the critter couldn't get in and destroy my garden, then filled it with organic soil, and some steer, this was last year. I have tried for 2 years to grow tomatoes in it. The bush gets big and then begins bears very little fruit and just grows bigger and bigger with no fruit. I've raised successfully tomatoes in clay soil, but this bed, although it gets plenty of sun and sufficient water, doesn't want to produce fruit. Maybe it's too hot in my area, and I need to do it earlier or later on in the season. I'm stumped. Help.

Here is my two cents worth. I think you have found a good way to try and keep the gophers out. You did not say what you were feeding with. OR perhaps the soil you used had too much nitrogen in the mix. Too much nitrogen will cause lots of growth but you also need phoshorus and potash to get them to bloom and fruit. You might try growing a 'late crop' I think there is still time for you. Some will produce in 60, 65 days or so. For sure I would try to find "EARLY GIRL" they are one of the fastest to produce for you. When you plant try to find a plant food lower in nitrogen and higher in phosphorus and potash. If they grew fine but no fruit, this would be my guess. Maybe feed with a 2-10-10 or somehting similar. (first number low) This should not produce the heavy growth but has the other to elements you need to produce fruit. There may be enough nitrogne still in the soil. If the plants seem to start off slow, give them a feeding of a higher nitrgen plant food and then back to the one listed above. See how that works.
The other two that I like is "Celebrity and "Champion" they are both very good, but take a little longer to ripen, like about 2 weeks or so.

Thank you so much for your advise. I will see what I can do. I've been on vacation and got back to a lot of jobs that need attention. I too like Early Girl, and Champion tomatoes. I will try and add some phoshorus and potash and see if I get better results. I may not have too much time for this year now. But will try and get an early start next year. By the way, I didn't feed the tomatoes anything extra after adding the steer manure compost. I also noticed the zucchini flowered and did not produce either. I'll certainly let you know next year how I do.
