General Information

It wasn't too long ago that Dwarf Crape Myrtles weren't recommended for the mild coastal Southern California climates because they had bad problems with powdery mildew there and in general did not bloom well. But there are now a number of new modern hybrids that are more vigorous, better foliaged, stronger flowering, and mildew resistant -- so these are the varieties you want to get. Of course, the more summer heat, the better, so it's true that gardeners in the hotter inland climates will have more success with Dwarf Crape Myrtles. For repeat bloom, make sure you remove developing seed heads after bloom, and for the most compact shrubs, you can prune plants nearly to the ground in late winter, before growth begins.
