General Information

Asian Pears in general have a lower chilling requirement than most European Pears, and so are quite growable in mild-winter climates. In the very mild Southern California coastal climates, it's best to grow the varieties with the lowest chill requirements to ensure a good crop. The companions (they pollinate each other) 'Tsu Li' and 'Ya Li' require only 300 hours of winter chill (temperatures below 45 degrees F.), which is quite reachable in the colder areas of these climate zones. Another popular self-fruitful variety is 'Shinseiki', which needs 350-450 hours of chill.
