General Information

Even in the mildest, frost-free climates of coastal Southern California, most anthuriums should be considered house or greenhouse plants, at least during the cooler months. However, there are two species that will grow outdoors in the most protected spots. These are the red-flowering Anthurium scherzerianum and a hardy form or relative of Anthurium hookeri that is grown under the name of Anthurium schlectendahlii. Like many orchids, these are epiphytes that are best grown in containers of orchid mix. Mature plants, however, can be grown in specially prepared beds in the ground.
