General Information

In the inland regions of Southern California, many species and hybrid Amaryllis may be grown outdoors, either in containers or in the ground. Just make sure they have excellent drainage and are protected from heavy frost and the strongest summer sun. Since these tropical bulbs are widely available in the fall, try growing them in containers the first winter, giving them the warmest and most protected spot you can. Then, if desired, you can plant them in the ground the following summer. Your bulbs will tell you when to water and fertilize by showing active growth, and when grown outdoors, you'll get flowers in spring and early summer.
