Large melon red flower with cerise trim on inner petals, rounded serrated edges. Outer petals melon red. 19 stigma lobes and swirling stamens. 1986. Double, cup and saucer. Flat basket growth. Ruby Snowflake x Tassel.
What we commonly call "epiphyllums" today are actually hybrids of epiphytic cacti species native to the jungles of Central and South America, as well as Mexico. Most are trailing stems that look best in hanging pots or tubs. All are tropical cactus and most grow on trees as epiphytes. The leaves are generally long flat smooth and spineless and usually notched or scalloped along the edges. Spring flowers are generally large reaching up to 10 inches.
The name "epiphyllum" commonly refers to a wide range of plants including the genus Epiphyllum and many crosses with related plants. the true epiphytic Epiphyllum species is just one of many epiphytic species used in hybridizing. In fact, some believe that Epiphyllum was used in as little as ten percent of the initial crosses. There is considerable debate on the name and how it is used.
