Small deciduous tree or shrub with edible nuts. Round double-serrated leaves grow alternately on branch. In spring distinctive long green catkins bear male flowers. Nuts grow in clusters of 2-6 at end of branches in a tuft of leaves called an involucre. Involucre is twice as long as nut, with deep irregular lobes.
Needs pollenizer, not self fertile. Host plant to butterflies.
