Purslane is a common, herbaceous succulent annual weed; it can grow up to a height of 18". The stems are reddish and the fleshy succulent leaves alternate, while the small flowers are yellow and growing in clusters. The flowers are hermaphrodite (male and female organs are on the same plant) and are pollinated by insects; the plant is self-fertile. The small, shiny-black edible seeds are wrinkled; they are formed in a tiny pod. According to Mother Earth News: Purslane may be a common plant, but it is uncommonly good for you. It tops the list of plants high in vitamin E and an essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Purslane provides six times more vitamin E than spinach and seven times more beta carotene than carrots. It is also rich in vitamin C, magnesium, riboflavin, potassium and phosphorus.
