A tropical herbaceous fruiting plant. About 25 species, some grown for edible fruit, some for ornament, one for fiber. Soft thick stems and broad, long leaves (5 - 9 ft.)which tatter easily in the wind. Fast growing, dwarf to about 25 ft. Spread by underground suckers.
Plant dies after flowering and fruiting but comes back with new shoots from the roots. Zones vary with species.
