The Venus Flytrap is a small herb, forming a rosette of four to seven leaves, which arise from a short subterranean stem that is actually a bulb-like rhizome. Each leaf reaches a maximum size of about three to seven centimeters. Dionaea muscipula a carnivorous plant utilizes an active steel trap mechanism. Trigger hairs on the inside lobes of the Dionaea muscipula must be triggered twice in succession (or two different hairs on same leaf) for the Dionaea muscipula to close. Closure of the Dionaea muscipula occurs in about 1/30 second in full sunlight. Cool temperatures and cloudy weather will slow the Dionaea muscipula trap mechanism down somewhat. The leaf perishes after capturing four insects in succession. Dionaea muscipula Traps triggered by non-prey will re-open in about 24 hours.
