There are 20 or more plamlike plants all native to South Africa. The genus includes both tuberous and columnar varities. Some have spiny foliage. Cycads are an ancient group of seed plants characterized by a large crown of compound leaves and a stout trunk. They are evergreen, gymnospermous, dioecious plants having large pinnately compound leaves.
The cycad fossil record dates to the Early Permian, 280 mya.
