  • My 5 favorite plants are
Only 5? Sorry, cant do that.
  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
    Miracle Grow works great!
  • And, what is the reality?
Not so much. Fine for short living annuals that are in containers. I would never recommend it for anything in the ground or anything in containers that you want to last for a long time.
  • What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
    Crocs!
  • What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
    Organic or non-organic?
  • And what's the answer?
Start with the basics. Good healthy soil. Organic starter fertilizers. Good biological controls if nessesary. You can never go wrong.
  • Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
I enjoy garden compass radio show. On TV I think that Paul James is very funny.
  • Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Deep water less often. Please, especially in San Diego. It is so much better to water deep and let plants develop a good healthy deep root system.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
    Tomato
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
I am into hot colors right now. Lots of oranges and yellows and apricots. Usually I am a blue person, but for some reason these other colors are interesting right now.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
Watering by hand is my favorite most relaxing part of gardening. I have a low water use garden, so for me this practice only takes place occasionally and I enjoy every minute of it.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Right now it is all of Balboa Park because of its history. Except for all of the invasive non-native trees of course.
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My Grandmother. I spent my Summers with her and she would get up at 4 each day to work in her garden before it got too hot. I can never forget the taste of her fresh cucumbers and green beans.
