Gardening Ability
3 - Garden a lot, with some success -
My 5 favorite plants are
Roses, Lavender, Ivy, Boxwood, Sweet Pea and Lilac. -
What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
That growing ivy on walls or houses is "dangerous" and will force cracks and damage. -
And, what is the reality?
I think Ivy on old brick buildings is one of the most lovely examples of blending architecture and landscape... and there are many buildings that are hundreds of years old with ivy growing on them which dispel the myth. -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
A short sleeved tee shirt with Cargo pants, LandsEnd Beach Trekker shoes, a sun visor and gardening gloves. -
Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
I like Erika Glassner of television's "A Gardener's Diary." She not only selects lovely gardens to visit, but she also cracks me up by tossing out the botanical names of every single plant in every single garden she visits before the garden owners can! I can't help but make a game out of watching the show. -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Dream it... and it can come true! -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
This is nearly impossible for me to answer, but I'll say Roses.
-
What is your favorite time in the garden?
Early morning is very nice, but my favorite time to work in the garden is late afternoon until sunset. -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
I can't pick just one - so my answer includes whites, lavenders and pinks. -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
Landscape Design is my favorite garden-related activity. I also love working with the many flowers in my English Cottage Garden and my first year experience with edibles in my new Potiger Garden. -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Buchhart Gardens in Victoria, BC. This garden is amazingly perfect and my visit to it in 2002 holds special memories. -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My mother influenced my love of gardening by setting an example for me and allowing me to help her at a very young age. Pat Hammer influenced my love of Ivy and topiary. And Garden Designers everywhere have influenced my passion for landscape design. -
What do you dislike most about gardening?
Persperation. -
What do you like most about gardening?
There are several things I like most about gardening:
1) The garden is constantly in a state of flux, so each day there are new blossoms to admire and new oppertunities to change things.
2) When working in the garden, my everyday work stress falls to the wayside.
3) The garden is both beautiful and bountiful - and it provides gorgeous flowers and delicious edibles for my table!
4) When working in my cottage garden, every neighbor who walks by pays me a compliment about how beautiful "Blossom Corner" is! -
