  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
    an old neighbor told me to cut the ends of my cucumber plants to increase cukes and decrease vine growth and to do it by the light of the full moon.

    baby turnips -- the flea beetles beat me. this year i'm trying row cover.

    i have a banana tree that's supposed to fruit. my hasn't in 4 years.

    planting seeds, setting out transplants, sitting quietly

    Longwood Gardens -- i've spent so much time there and never been disappointed
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
    My dad worked two full time jobs and had 3 gardens -- our backyard, my grandparents' backyard, and half an acre of corn and tomatoes on one of his employer's land near a river which flooded each spring. we sold corn and tomatoes, delivering the last of the crops on our bikes before school on September mornings. He was a large man but amazingly gentle with small plants.

    I just started an Imperial Star artichoke in my husband's greenhouse. should i plant it in a 24"pot in inticipation of bringing it in next fall or will it indeed bear fruit this summer?

    watching things grow, eating things that have grown, being outdoors (altho i have 45 houseplants, all 46 of us are eager to go out May to October)
